B.Sc Environmental Health Science

Environmental health is a branch of public health, that is concerned with the theory and practice of assessing and controlling factors in the environment that can potentially affect health.
Environmental health includes both the direct pathological effects of chemicals, radiation and some biological agents and the effects (often indirect) on health and wellbeing.

The program is designed to provide the training needed for an understanding of the environment, health and safety, to build upon the foundation by exploring in-depth, specific aspects like epidemiology, workplace safety, hazardous and municipal waste management, impact of science and technology on the environment.

The philosophy of the programme is in the training of personnel to the highest academic and professional standards in the identification and resolution of environmental health and safety issues. The programme will provide higher capacity skilled manpower, trained specifically for promoting health and preventing illness through applying scientific skills to solving real-life problems and better management of environmental hazards through the open and distance learning mode.

Potential Career Paths include: Environmental Toxicologist or Pollution Analyst, Health and Safety Engineer, Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, Corporate Health and Safety Specialist.

Admission Requirements

Candidates may be considered for admission to 200 level B.Sc. EHS Degree course provided they have the following qualifications:

(a) At least five (5) credit passes at not more than two sittings at the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE/NECO/GCE/NABTEB) examinations in the following subjects:

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry
  • Physics/Agricultural Science/Geography
  • Biology/Health Science

(b) In addition to the above (a) prospective candidates are required to possess qualifications in science-related disciplines.

  • Ordinary National Diploma (OND) with Upper Credit in relevant science courses.
  • National Certificate Education (NCE) with Merit in relevant science courses.
  • Diploma in Public Health Superintendent (WAHEB) 1982-1998 minimum of pass.
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least Upper Credit in any science course.
  • Registered Nurse Certificate/B.Sc. Nursing.

Kindly note that there is no admission into 100 and 300 levels; Admission is only at 200 Level.

Graduation Requirements

The following conditions are required to graduate from the B.Sc. in Environmental Health Science programme:

Years/ Semester Required: The candidate must have spent a minimum of 4 years (or 8 semesters) from entry (from 200 Level).
Credit Units: Candidates that entered the programme must have a minimum of 120 credit units to graduate.

Compulsory (Core Courses): The candidates must pass all compulsory (core) courses as listed in the outlined programme proposal (OPP) to graduate.
