You are welcome to the Department of Economics, National Open University of Nigeria.
The Department since its inception in 2014 has grown from strength to strength and has graduated students who are ambassadors of the Department worldwide. The Department has crop of qualified and dedicated academic staff who give their best in their daily activities with a view to continuously raise the standard of the Department in order to be relevant and play a pivotal role in tackling the economic and development challenges of the 21st century. The Department of Economics offers a four-year programme leading to the award of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Honours degree as well as a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) degree. The duration for a BSc Economics programme includes a minimum of 8 semesters for 100 level candidates and 6 semesters minimum for students admitted through Direct Entry.
Students of Economics Department are trained to become graduates that will play positive roles towards the social and economic advancement of the nation and the world at large
The Economics programme was approved as a unit under the School of Arts and Social Sciences by the University Senate in 2008. Following the restructuring of the former Schools and Units system by the then Vice Chancellor Professor Abdallah Uba Adamu in 2016, the Economics Unit metamorphosed into the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The Department commenced in 2013 and was successfully resource verified by NUC in 2014. The Department was fully accredited in 2018. Since its inception, the Department has been coordinated/headed by the following academic staff
- Ganiyat A. Adesina-Uthman (2014 -2020);
- Dr. Emmanuel I. Ajudua (2020 – Date)
To provide functional, cost-effective, flexible learning, that adds life-long value to quality of education for all who seek knowledge. These are in line with National Policy on education and within the bounds of those of the National Open University of Nigeria
The philosophy of the Bachelor of Science Degree programme in the Department of Economics centres on providing quality and functional knowledge of economic analysis to students by equipping them with critical and analytical skills through flexible learning; to expose students to the use of modern technology needed to identify and proffer solutions to economic problems to promote national development

The following conditions are required to graduate from the BSc. in Public Health programme:
Years/ Semester Required: The candidate must have spent a minimum of 4 years (or 8 semesters) from entry (from 200 Level).
Credit Units: Candidates that entered the programme must have a minimum of 120 credit units to graduate.
Compulsory (Core Courses): The candidates must pass all compulsory (core) courses as listed in the outlined programme proposal (OPP) to graduate.
